Thanks for the guide it was easy and very use full. I got an NSA-210 and I first tried with having al the files on the usb stick, then when I learned how it worked I tired to put it on the hdd as one should do for the NSA-220 and it worked as good as whit the usb stick.

So you could change that in the first post saying the NSA-210 can't install FFP on the hdd.

Thanks for that info. Did you equip your NSA210 with only one disk, and use a default volume arrangement?

The reason that I said HD installation isn't supported is because it works via the /i-data/md0 symlink, and I didn't expect that to be available on the 210, since it implies a RAID array.

Yes I used one hdd and one usb stick only. The hdd is formated in JBOD xfs. That is the defult setting on the NSA 210, I have not changed or reformated the hdd since i installed it.
The usb stick can be both in the front port and the back port, I have not tried to install it on an e-sata hdd yet.

And yes i have to use the /i-data/md0/ to cd to any other share on the hdd, the usb stick is in /e-data/***/.

Hi Mijzelf!

Thanks for this great tutorial! :)

One point where I stuck was, that my NSA did not boot with the stick, because the after_booting.sh and usb_key_func.sh where not set executeable. I think if you add a hint on that, it will be perfekt ;)

Thanks again! :-)

best regards,
Carsten

I have made a small tutorial on how to make passwordless SSH connections to the NSA210.

http://imageshack.dk//viewimage.php?fil ... I55169.png

I had some problems myself, so I just thought that it might help someone who want's this set up but keeps getting the "server refused our key" message or something alike.

By the way. How do you insert and image directly? I tried but the image would not show up, just the word image.

Hi. Thank you very much for perfect manual how to..., but I have one problem. When I follow Mijzelf manual everything is ok (on my NSA210), untill I go to point: To enable an ssh server: telnet to the device type /ffp/start/sshd.sh start When I type that, it show me 3x can't load library 'libz.so.1' and SSH doesnt wotk :( Don't you know what's wrong? I try it for 3 times, and still with same result. All needed files (after_booting.sh, fun_plug.tgz, md5sum, nsa210_check_file, nsa220_checksum, root.tgz, usb_key_func.sh) I have on my USB (with ext2).

When you call '/ffp/start/sshd.sh start' for the first time, /ffp/bin/ssh-keygen is invoked three times to generate an rsa1, a dsa and an rsa host key. This executable is dependent on /ffp/lib/libz.so.1, so when that library (actually a symlink to libz.so.1.2.3) lacks, you will get this message 3 times. (And sshd will not start, I think, without hostkeys).

So somehow you are missing this lib. Maybe your fun_plug.tgz got corrupted (this archive contains libz.so.1). Try to redownload it, put it on the stick, and reboot.
All needed files (after_booting.sh, fun_plug.tgz, md5sum, nsa210_check_file, nsa220_checksum, root.tgz, usb_key_func.sh) I have on my USB (with ext2).
fun_plug.tgz is gone, I suppose? It should. after_booting.sh extracts and deletes it.

Yes, the file fun_plug.tgz is mising after first reboot. I don't thing, this file is corrupted, because when I try to unpack it in my Win7, it works fine. And the file libz.so.1.2.3 is here (I thing in folder lib).

Now I try to download fun_plug.tgz again from diferent place, via NAS format USB stick to EXT2 and mount it in my PC. In totalcommander I can see only 1 folder lost+found. So I move here all needed files (as I wrote before) and reboot NAS again. (Now I move files via TotalCommander, in first attempt I move files via NAS web interface) Now I got different result. NAS rebooting, and rebooting and rebooting. After 15min it still rebooting. So I remove usb stick, and restart it. NAS start after 1min. But with usb stick, NAS is unable to start. Its really odd for me :(

Totalcommander? You mean you use a Windows tool to unpack the tgz file? That ain't gonna work, I'm afraid. /lib/libz.so.1 is a symlink to /lib/libz.so.1.2.3. The concept of symlinks is not supported by Windows, so I don't think it's possible to create one using Windows. Further the file attributes system is incompatible. I *think* all files in the ffp tree have an executable flag now, which make some illegal files being executed, which causes a reboot.

Just remove the ffp folder on the stick, put fun_plug.tgz and rootfs.tgz again on the stick, and reboot. after_booting.sh will unpack and remove the .tgz files.

Doesn't this method work on NSA221?

Maybe. There is a mechanism in the firmware to run a script on usb-stick at boot, wiki, but it's behaving differently, the boot process will unconditionally be stopped after running the script.
I have been working on it, link; start reading at august 17. The other party didn't answer anymore, and I don't have a 221 for testing.

NSA-210: Also add md5sum and nsa210_check_file. (You can omit nsa220_check_file, but it won't hurt). md5sum should have the executable flag set.
how can i set the executable flag ?

im am on a NSA210 btw

When you put the file on the stick via the Samba share, it's automatically executable.
When you use some Linux box to put the file on the stick, use the command chmod:

Code: Select all

chmod a+x md5sum
