Upgrading the kernel from 2.6.18.6 to 2.6.xx

As subject says I wonder if it's advisable to do?

Reading the info from build_NSA-220.tar.gz it mentions...

Code: Select all

...
 - You can also upgrade between 2.6.xx releases by patching. Patches are
distributed in the traditional gzip and the newer bzip2 format. To
install by patching, get all the newer patch files, enter the
top level directory of the kernel source (linux-2.6.xx) and execute:

		gzip -cd ../patch-2.6.xx.gz | patch -p1

   or
		bzip2 -dc ../patch-2.6.xx.bz2 | patch -p1

(repeat xx for all versions bigger than the version of your current
source tree, _in_order_) and you should be ok. You may want to remove
the backup files (xxx~ or xxx.orig), and make sure that there are no
failed patches (xxx# or xxx.rej). If there are, either you or me has
   made a mistake.
...
The reason I would like to update is that I found some interesting stuff at Linux Kernel Configuration Archive (http://kernel.xc.net) and while re-compiling to get the USB HUB issue sorted it would be nice to also add kernel support for USB Serialport (FTDI) that seems to be fully supported from 2.6.26, see link below...

http://kernel.xc.net/search.cgi?string= ... l&arch=arm

And if it's possible where do I find the above mentioned patches? I tried to look around at http://www.kernel.org but all links seems dead...

I don't think this approach will bring you far (in version number). You can update a vanilla kernel all the way up, this way, but this kernel is not vanilla. As soon as the changed kernel doesn't fit anymore under the ZyXEL changes, it's done.

The orion platform is supported in the vanilla kernel. It shouldn't be too hard to bring in support for the NSA220. When you really want a (much) newer kernel that is a better way, I think.

BTW, you kernel already has FTDI serial support.

Thanks for clarifying!

Great, so all thats needed is to enable CONFIG_USB_SERIAL in .config when re-compiling?

I think you only have to 'modprobe ftdi_sio'
