Mounting a NTFS USB-drive

After a few weeks of mucking around with Android stuff it's soon time for the yearly backup so I tried to mount an external NTFS USB drive by following this guide...

After installing "ntfs-3g" and "libfuse2" the USB drive is recoginzed OK with
fdisk -l | grep NTFS

/dev/sdc1 1 121601 976760001 7 HPFS/NTFS
But when I try to mount it I receive the following message and "/mnt/usbdrive" is not accessable but it shows up as following when typing mount
...
/dev/sdc1 on /mnt/usbdrive type fuse (rw,allow_other)
...
I mount using...
mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usbdrive
And get...
WARNING: Deficient Linux kernel detected. Some driver features are
not available (swap file on NTFS, boot from NTFS by LILO), and
unmount is not safe unless it's made sure the ntfs-3g process
naturally terminates after calling 'umount'. If you wish this
message to disappear then you should upgrade to at least kernel
version 2.6.20, or request help from your distribution to fix

Do I need some other packages to read/write NTFS or is it due to older kernel version (2.6.18.6)? As usual any help appreciated!

The error message is quite clear. The kernel is too old for fuse/ntfs-3g. When you only want to read the disk, you could use the ntfs kernelmodule:

modprobe ntfs
mount -t ntfs -o ro /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usbdrive
Maybe the module also supports writing, but that's not recommended.

The other option is to port and compile a newr kernel.

Mijzelf, without your help I would be lost but I do learn something new each time ;) Accessing NTFS disks as ro is better than nothing.
