I recently bought a 1T Ethernet disk mini home edition hoping to use it with a VPN to be a family server. Then I find out that I am stuck with the "hipserve" software. I also learned that you can not work with files directly from the drive but have to do the hipserve shuffle download. This is crazy! Axentra says you can but will not tell you how since the Disk mini has been discontinued. I guess that is supposed to be a sales technique. I want the drive to adapt too my needs, not me to the drive's.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of the hipserve soft ware and use this disk as a network storage that you can open a file directly from it by going to "my computer" and opening the drive just like a local drive? The way LaCie and Axentra set this up makes it useless to me.

I also need to use it for work. Since the economy tanked, there is not a great demand for bookkeepers for construction companies since there is little construction going on. I want to venture out on my own doing contract bookwork, payroll, etc. I want to be able to take my laptop to a construction office and show them that they can send me their files directly (by uploading to my drive) without email so I can work on their "stuff" and then they can get it from me. So I need a secure VPN. I had that where I used to work on a 350g Disk mini and it was great. I know I need a static IP which is no problem. I also have a firewall appliance (watchguard) to setup with the VPN. I don't really want to use any of the vpn companies as it adds the step of going through them. ALL help greatly appreciated.

I also have a Linksys WRT54G. It shows that it can be used with VPN but is it really capable or should I change the firmware to an aftermarket?

Thanks, Mac
