OK did just that but still no luck ...
What could I be missing ?

Created the array :
mdadm --create /dev/md0 -v --raid-devices=2 --level=linear /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb --metadata=0.90
mkfs.xfs /dev/md0
mdadm --stop /dev/md0

Got the UUID through :
blkid /dev/sda2

Then copied the UUID in the file in sda8 /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf :
DEVICE /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=linear num-devices=2 UUID=163218f3:299b9ccc:3c666c38:60539313

NB : I noticed in the logs once in the LaCie web administration that I seem to have a "XFS : SB validation failed" line, could XFS formatting be the culprit ? Would formatting as something else help ?

In the fstab, md0 is listed as XFS though ...
Feel so close to managing it but this raid setup leaves me puzzled

Sorry, that might be quite stupid actually.
Noticed that there are different UUIDs for the partitions (identical between themselves) (i.e. UUID from sda2 = UUID from sdb).
And the one from /dev/md0

Which one should go to mdadm.conf ?

You should use the UUID of the array. And it's a known problem with external formatted data partitions that sometimes the xfs filesystem is not accepted. I *think* this is because the (old) kernel has a older version of xfs implemented, although I never found any xfs release notes which state that it's not downwards compatible.
I have read (for the Networkspace) that you could also use ext3, and, if you want, use the webinterface to reformat it xfs. Another solution is to install a ssh or telnet daemon, and format the array on the box itself.

Hi,
Tried all this but still no success.
If I use the other UUID, or ext3 instead of XFS (and with the corresponding adjustement in fstab) still no luck ... the fateful "nbsp;"

In log I get the following :
With ext3 I get a message :
Jan 3 04:29:01 kernel: md: md0 stopped.
Jan 3 04:29:01 kernel: md: bind
Jan 3 04:29:01 kernel: EXT3-fs: unable to read superblock

With xfs :
Jan 3 04:42:55 kernel: md: md0 stopped.
Jan 3 04:42:55 kernel: md: bind
Jan 3 04:42:55 kernel: XFS: SB read failed

Would you maybe have the start log so I could try and compare ?

Thanks in advance

Veni, Vidi, Lacie
Freaking unbelievable : I managed to get it working.

I was trying to mount it with 2 different size disks (500Go and 1To) since it is only stripping I was assuming it would make no difference anyway.
Getting nowhere and in a final desperate attempt I retried with two 500Go disk and it worked right away (with XFS formatting).
Still don't have a clue why but 2 different size disks seems to be messing it up.

All this with the procedure I described a couple of post ago and the correct UUID of course.

Many MANY thanks again Mijzelf for the help.
