Hello mijzelf.

thanks. .

Your Echo "Hello" idea gave :-

"dd: opening /dev/sdb7 : permission denied"

tired. Bed now. Try again tomorrow . . .

Yes. The the owner and the group have read/write permission. Only World has no permissions.

Did a google, and found this. I tried it here, and sudo is indeed only for the first command. So try
Code:
sudo gzip -d /path/to/partitionx.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/sdbx
I suppose I´ve only done this kind of work by logging in as root.

Hello Mijzelf.

Progress.

That sudo twice worked, so no more "access denied" but it now reports that no bytes transferred in 20 seconds. Gparted confirms no data was copied across to the new partitions. The copy partitions were sucessfully unzipped though.

An alternative approach.

I have two of the USB adaptors so I can plug OLD drive as sdb and NEW drive as sdc in together. Can I copy partitions across to new drive without going through zipping with Gparted ? using dd command? Like :-
Code:
 sudo dd if=/dev/sdb5 of=/dev/sdc5

or something like that ? Do I need a "|" or ">" in the middle there somewhere ?

And another approach.

Can I use Linux Ghost or similar to directly copy the image of OLD disc onto the NEW disc ?. Then ftp the whole 700mb image to Darth.

Shaun

The dd command should work without "|" or ">". Make sure you are not copiing the wrong way. if is inputfile, of is outputfile. The first plugged in disk will become sdb, I think.

I don't have any expirience with Ghost, so I can´t tell if that will work, but I wouldn't know why not. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if you could feed Ghost with your .gz files, and just let him restore the data.

Any idea where the '20 seconds' message comes from? Is the usb disk accessed in this 20 seconds? (flashing led). How much time did it take to create that particular dumpfile?

OK, with drone's help I was able to restore his disk images to two 1TB hard drives. I get all blue lights, but am unable to log into the 2Big with the Network Assistant or see it on my LAN. What is the default IP? My home network runs under the 192.168.0.X address. I tried the reset option listed on the Lacie site. No luck.

Help, I am so close!!!!

Hello Darth.

assuming the Lacie Network Configuration app did not find the Lacie, then . . .

try turning the lacie off, then back on. You might need to try this a few times before Lacie Network Assistant app actually finds it. Otherwise . . .

first check edconf.xml file in /dev/sdx9 where x is your lacie drive. Its in /etc directory. Read the file with a text editor. Check the section on IP address does it say <dhcp> or has it got a manual IP address ?

Check the section on which services run automatically at boot. Ethernet should say "yes".

Got more suggestions if these don't work. I e-mailed you edconf.xml from Lacie 2Big with IP is dhcp and also one with manual IP setup and all services set to operate at boot. So you can see what it should look like.

OK, I am stuck. I followed drone's instructions to the letter. I have all the partition's and files in place. When I power on the 2Big, I get three blue lights. Yet I am not getting anything on the network. The Network Assistant just searches away and the the power switch does not shutdown the unit.

Tried copying over a modified edconf.xml.

Is this a permissions issue? Is there something else wrong?

Should I preformat the drives in a particular format? FAT32 vs linux partitions?

Help

OK, I copied the default edconf.xml from partition 9 to partition 8 and did not modify it. I was able to log onto the Lacie 2Big. However only one drive is blue, the other is red and no volumes are seen on the NAS.

Congratulations Darth, that you came so far!

I think you'll have to build the raid array by hand. Instructions can be found here. Alas Videodrone didn't report back if he succeeded.

For some reason the descriptor of the raid device is broken.

Does the userdata partition contain any important data? If not, and if you can open a shell you can re-create the raid device.
Code:
#create the raidarray
mdadm --create /dev/md4 --level=raid0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
#assemble the raidarray
mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
#create a filesystem
/sbin/mkfs.xfs /dev/md4
#mount it
mount /dev/md4 /home
use --level=raid0 for striping (raid device is twice the size of a data partition) and --level=raid1 for mirroring (raid device is redundant)

So would I enter this code on both drives while hooked up through Ubuntu's term? Do I need to create a partition itself or the Lacie manager will allow the volume creation in the web interface?

Ow. You don't have shell access to the NAS, do you? This code needs to be executed with both disks connected. It doesn't matter if they are equally connected. I mean, it's fine when one is connected via USB and one via SATA, if that's easier to manage. The only important thing is that you know which devices they are. Likely /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc when connected to your Ubuntu box. So the first commands change to
Code:
mdadm --create /dev/md4 --level=raid0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2
mdadm --assemble /dev/md4 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2

Quote:

The fysical partitions already exist (/dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdc2). According to Videodrones logs a script is executed which tries to assemble a raid array of these partitions on (virtual) device /dev/md4. I really don't know if this device should already contain a filesystem. Since LaCie only permits preformatted disks, the webmanager doesn't need to be able to handle exceptions. The question is what is supposed to be an exception in this case. To be safe I would create a filesystem which is recognized as a normal situation. (And I think that would be XFS)

When you execute this command on a Ubuntu box you should unmount the array (or shutdown the box) before disconnecting the disks
Code:
umount /dev/md4
On a Ubuntu box you'll have to add sudo to each command.

I installed both drives on my PC with the drives as sdb and sdd. Could not get the raid to assemble. Still getting no drive listed on the web interface. Big front red light and one blue on red on back.

Any hints?

Videodrone found a logfile on his system. Maybe you can find it to? The most common place to search is /var/log, but I don't know which partition it could be. Maybe partition 8, since it seems to contain the current configuration. (BTW, it could be handy to post the dump of the partitiontable which Videodrone send you)

Some other thoughts:
-Is there an option in the webinterface to return to factory defaults? Try it.
-You created a raid0 array. Maybe it should be a JBOD array.

Obviously something is wrong with the raid array:

Aug 5 22:59:58 LaCie-2big local1.notice mountuserfs: mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sda2.
So somehow the Ubuntu mdadm is incompatible with the LaCie one. Of course you can try one of the zillion switches to get it compatible, but likely it's more easy to force shell access via telnet on the LaCie, as described here, and create the array directly on the LaCie. The hardest part is getting the disks out of the NAS, and I think you won't have any difficulties with that. ;)

(BTW, it seems the box can handle both raid0 and JBOD:

Aug 5 22:59:53 LaCie-2big user.info kernel: md: raid0 personality registered as nr 2
Aug 5 22:59:53 LaCie-2big user.info kernel: md: raid1 personality registered as nr 3
)
