Hello, how do I access my network space over the internet?

Its setup with the FTP turned on.
I am behind a firewall of a sky DG834g, the space is set to be at IP 192.168.0.40

How would I access it using Filezilla etc while I'm at work?

Thank you.

I have now connected via my local pc on the network and will try from work n the morning.

This is going to be so useful. :D

(I wish I'd kept my second one now).

Hmm, what about accessing "myshare"?

I wonder if I set the passwords to be the same will that work?

Nope, thats not it.

How do I access the myshare drive, is there some other way of entering the admin username & password?

EDIT: uh oh - manual says I can only access the openshare drive:(
anyone know a simple way around that?

Looking at page 15 of the user manual. it definitely says:
Quote:
Myshare
‚ú¶Admin login required locally and remotely via FTP

This infers that it should work.

However, a login with "Admin" as the username and the correct password fail to login at all.

So is there anything else that I should be doing?

Thank you.

Despite page 15 of the user manual saying I can, I cannot FTP to Myshare.

Example - I cannot change the Admin name so I set the password to "Iamtheboss".
I can http over local network to Myshare OK.

I have turned on FTP and set the "user" account to "ftp" & password to "letmein".

I can FTP to the drive & access openshare with I.E. user name "ftp" & password "letmein" (examples only).
I get:
Quote:
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220 ProFTPD 1.3.2rc1 Server (LaCie) [192.168.0.40]
Command: USER ftp
Response: 331 Password required for ftp
Command: PASS *********
Response: 230 User ftp logged in
Status: Connected
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is the current directory
Status: Directory listing successful

But if I try and FTP to it with the user name of "Admin" & Password "Iamtheboss"
it will not connect.
I get:
Quote:
Status: Connecting to 192.168.0.40:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220 ProFTPD 1.3.2rc1 Server (LaCie) [192.168.0.40]
Command: USER Admin
Response: 331 Password required for Admin
Command: PASS *********
Response: 530 Login incorrect
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

And if I try and FTP to it with the user name of "ftp" & Password "Iamtheboss"
it will not connect.

I get:
Quote:
Response: 220 ProFTPD 1.3.2rc1 Server (LaCie) [192.168.0.40]
Command: USER ftp
Response: 331 Password required for ftp
Command: PASS *********
Response: 530 Login incorrect
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

I have opened the port 21 to FTP and set the drive IP to pass through OK.

Now I would think that perhaps its something to do with accsessing it locally as I can see its quoting the IP of [192.168.0.40], however it works fine when I access using the "user" account (ftp/letmein).
I am using Filezilla to access.

So can someone say for definite that "Yes you can FTP to Myshare" ??

or is it that once I have FTP'd using the ftp access, I then somehow tell it the admin password for access to Myshare?
(passwords are examples & not the true password).

Well, I don't know the 'Network Space', but I assume you've tried all settings in the webinterface. So what you want is impossible with the 'standard' Network Space.

You can try to add and sshserver to your box. This opens the possibility to edit the /etc/ftpd.conf by hand, unlocking all possibilities of your ftp server.
And if that's not enough, you can chroot Debian giving you the choice between a zillion different ftp servers.

Is it impossible though?

It could just be that I dont know how to access it via FTP, I'm not a regular user of FTP so dont know if perhaps there is spomething
special I should be doing?

After all, the manual does say it should do it.

But yes thanks - I'll read up on those links, I just need to know if doing that in any way affects how the drive currently works
(in a bad way).

Thank you.

Well, you already got FTP working, didn't you? So the cake is three-quarter consumed. You are only not able to share each share you want. In that case I'd assume that the webinterface is too simplistic to generate the ftpd.conf needed for your needs.

And about adding a shell, that is generally harmless. Of course having a shell can be dangerous. A shell gives full access to the Linux system inside, and it is easy to screw up the machine if you know how to do that. Or if you don't.

I assume it was spam. Regularly someone creates an account just to post a dozen of spam messages in random threads. They are banned asap, and their messages are deleted. But the notification mails cannot be recalled. Sorry.
