add telnet and ssh without disassembling - problems

Post by PartisanEntity » Mon Dec 14, 2009 4:00 pm

Hi all,

I am trying to get telnet and ssh on to my Network Space. I have firmware 1.1.8.

I have tried this tutorial:
http://blog.hendricksen.eu/2009/07/29/g ... omment-335

But I am stuck at point 4, I can't get utelnetd to launch using the method stated.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I am a bit of a newbie at this!

Thank you!

If you made it to step 11, you have terminal access. Congratulations!

It is easier to install daemons through ipkg. ipkg is like apt-get, only for devices with little resources. Follow instructions for manual bootstrap here. If you use ipkg, the init scripts will be installed for you automatically.

And it is better to install an ssh server like open-ssh or dropbear. More possibilities and secure.

If you want to have it as in the tutorial you referred to, google "vim beginner tutorial" and do "vim /etc/init.d/telnetd".

Have fun!

Thanks a lot Daan, I kind of figured you would be the one to reply :P

In the tutorial I linked to, they/we got rid of the root password so that we could log in through telnet.

Now doesn't that mess up internal features in the NAS that may or may not be expect some default password?

And what happens if I were to select my own password for root, is that advisable or better leave it as it is now, which is blank?

I have had no problems like that with changing/removing the password.

Thanks.

Now what packaged would you recommend to replace point 11 in the tutorial? What package do I need to install to have telnet launched automatically after a reboot?

Code: Select all

# ipkg install openssh
will get the ssh server up and running.

Oh, and to make it start during boot you have to do

Code: Select all

# ln -s /opt/etc/init.d/S40sshd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/

Your remark of last dec
Okay, I got it, now I am stuck at stept 11, how do I do that?

I am still stuck at step 4, how did you manage to proceed.

Kind regards, Edjepetje
