How to install C compiler on Sitecom MD-253?

Post by eherle » Fri Sep 02, 2011 10:24 pm

I have some good experiences in using rsync to backup data to a FreeNAS server. I would like to implement the same mechanism on my Sitecom MD-253 NAS, but the rsync command is not available ("-sh: rsync: not found"). So I downloaded the rsync sources and tried to install them. This did not work, because a C compiler is lacking:

Code: Select all

/home/PUBLIC/rsync-3.0.8 # ./configure
configure.sh: Configuring rsync 3.0.8
checking build system type... armv5tejl-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... armv5tejl-unknown-linux-gnu
checking whether to include debugging symbols... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl.exe... no
configure.sh: error: in `/home/PUBLIC/rsync-3.0.8':
configure.sh: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details
So, I probably need to install a C compiler as well. How can I do that?

It could be hard and probably not a good idea to compile on the device. The best is to cross compile.
Either in the forum or in the wiki it should be explained how to build optware for the md253.
If you don't want to go through that path, look at http://r26936.ovh.net/sitecom/optware. If you unpack ipkg.tar.gz, you could try to install the rsync_3.0.8-1_arm.ipk package. I've not tried this, but should be straightforward.

Interesting, I'd like to try to install the optware, but I cannot figure out how to install it. Is there any documentation with installation instructions for the optware variant?
