This is very disappointing indeed. I expectyed that after flashing a new firmware version, evrything would keep on working.
Or at least that it could be re-installed. Perhaps you're right, buying another NAS would solve most problems.

Finally, after a lot of googling and trying, I managed to get my printer (Samsung CLP-300) to work as a network printer using my Sitecom MD-254. I don't know if anybody is interested in the solution. I changed a lot of things, perhaps some of them were not necessary. I'll try to write them down in a document and put that in my dropbox.

Hello Jos,
please write down your changes. Sometimes I succeed in using my MD-254 as a printer server using the standard software, but it is not very stable and gives up, I have no strong indication what shuts it down and how to restart it. It looks like a matter of luck.
Thanks,
Chris

Hello to all,
I just found on the sitecom site version 21 of the firmware, did anybody try it?
Thanks,
Chris

I wrote down some additional instructions in the document.
After installing software version 2.4.21, I applied all the changes. After that de printer worked :)

I used vi editor to edit the files. For instructions on how to use vi there are sevral guides on the internet.

Hello josvl52,

I'am able to login the NAS MD-253 with program putty (connection type telnet) and the login 'toor' pass ........, but I can not use Unix commands like ls or vi, etc.
Only limited to commands like CWD, XCWD, CDUP, PWD (FTP commands), in fact I can do not so much.

Also tried to login with program putty with connection type SSH but mentioned login doesn't work anymore, Access Denied

Is there something I do wrong?

Thanks

I use the windows 7 telnet. Perhaps you should install it on WIn 7 first.
When opening a Telnet session with the IP-address of the Sitecom, it start in Superuser mode and I'm able to modify whatever I want. Only when installing a new firmware or doing a factory reset, all changes will disappear.

Did you succeed in getting your printer to work??

After a reset of the NAS, I saw that the hosts and lmhost file were filled correctly, so I did not have to edit them.
Printcap and the spool directories were gone and I had to create them again with the lp-permission.

Hello, guys.

As I started this thread a few years ago, I had an operational MD-254.
Only the printer server was not working.

Since 2 days ago, it seems to "stall" after some time being ON. Any ideas ?
Upgrading to the latest firmware did not help (or make it worse).
UPDATE: Disconnecting the power supply from the 220V power supply seems to have done the trick.

Secondly, I installed telnet and ssh packages and made them work. I can login.
But, to try to get the printer working, I can not edit /var/spool and some of the other files do not save?
How do I unlock/access/modify the storage to edit the files?

Thank you very much for helping.

Hello Borisdoli

Perhaps you already solved the problem...

Did you forget to create the lpd and mylp directories and change ownership?

cd /var/spool
mkdir lpd
chgrp lp lpd
cd lpd
mkdir mylp
chgrp lp mylp
