Plex via FFP , managed to get running - Question for Mijzelf

Post by netprw » Sat Jan 12, 2013 2:21 pm

Hello, I managed to get the Mijzelf plex media server package "sort of" running on FFP 0.7.

When it starts (using the Mizjelf package) I noticed purely by accident their are 2 processes running :

plex 14279 0.7 5.3 56152 13808 pts/1 Sl 14:16 0:01 /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server
plex 14295 8.1 7.1 51128 18256 pts/1 Sl 14:16 0:17 Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Framework.bundle/Contents/Resources/Versions/2/Python/bootstrap.py
root@nas:/ffp/start#

And the app hangs.

If however I kill the plug in process (14295) the the boot up resumes and the PMS starts up ok on the Zyxel nas via ffp :

Processes running then are :

plex 14279 0.6 5.9 84588 15324 pts/1 Sl 14:16 0:01 /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server
plex 14755 59.0 1.6 7856 4172 pts/1 R 14:21 0:01 Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Framework.bundle/Contents/Resources/Versions/2/Python/bootstrap.py --server-version 0.9.6.9.240-8fd9c6a
plex 14760 56.0 4.5 74068 11696 pts/1 Sl 14:21 0:01 /e-data/9ea33ac4-7701-4a15-aa36-7387b6bd3912/ffproot/ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex DLNA Server

The Web admin page via a browser on port 32400 and everything is then presented, and the PMS client on a SAMSUNG tv see's the server fine.

Has anyone any idea how I can disable this plug in in the config to allow the PMS to boot normally ?

Also, I seem to be having difficulty in the web config to save the folders where my video is located, it finds them ok but doesn't save ? Can I manually set my video location etc in a config file somewhere ?

thanks

Good catch! And I am a moron.

Can you try this: Install python. The 2.7.2 in my repository seems to suffice.
Kill plex.
Then execute:

Code: Select all

cd /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/
su
find . -name '*.py' | xargs sed -i 's|usr/bin/python|ffp/bin/python|g'
find . -name '*.py' | xargs sed -i 's|usr/bin/env|ffp/bin/env|g'
Start plex.

A .py file is a python script. It starts with a 'she-bang': #! 'command interpreter'. This tells the kernel which script interpreter has to be used. In the plex scripts two different she-bangs are used, '/usr/bin/env python', and '/usr/bin/python'. It both should start python. Well, the first one doesn't work, because there is no /usr/bin/env, and the second one starts the (crippled) firmware version.
The two 'find' lines exchange these with the ffp versions. On my box plex now starts normally, as far as I can see, but I can't test any further as I don't have any plex clients.

Didnt work for me unfortunately.

I installed python, but then when ran the commands got a lot of errors :

If I kill the process again It starts and I can get to the management screen on :

http://nas:32400/manage/index.html#home

But if i add a folder (the list comes up ok and i can select) but no way to then save it.

thanks

Ah, sorry, error of me. Didn't consider spaces in filenames. Can you repeat with

Code: Select all

cd /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/
su
find . -name '*.py' -print0 | xargs -0 sed -i 's|usr/bin/python|ffp/bin/python|g'
find . -name '*.py' -print0 | xargs -0 sed -i 's|usr/bin/env|ffp/bin/env|g'
What do you exactly mean with 'no way to save it'? No save button, or it just doesn't 'stick', or it doesn't survive a reboot, ...?

commands run through now with no errors, but exact same issue on startup Im afraid - once again if i manually kill the "plug in" process it then fires up.

On start up :

plex 420 0.6 5.4 56160 13860 pts/0 Sl 19:56 0:01 /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server
plex 441 13.8 7.3 51640 18768 pts/0 Sl 19:56 0:31 Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Framework.bundle/C

- media manager unavailable.

I then kill the process :

root@nas:/ffp/start# kill -9 441

Additional processes start up and the media manager web page immediately kicks in.
plex 420 0.5 6.5 88104 16876 pts/0 Sl 19:56 0:03 /ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server
plex 1159 69.5 7.3 51640 18768 pts/0 Sl 20:05 0:31 Plex Plug-in [com.plexapp.system] Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Framework.bundle/Contents/Resources/V
plex 1165 3.6 5.0 101800 12928 pts/0 Sl 20:05 0:01 /e-data/9ea33ac4-7701-4a15-aa36-7387b6bd3912/ffproot/ffp/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex DLNA Server

Regarding the inability to save locations of media in Plex, (tried to upload a document to illustrate but it doesnt let me on this forum)

The web page lets you select the "movies" group etc, then prompts for a path to the media in a drop down dialogue box - which see all the folders correctly on the nas, but then their is no way to save this selection when you add it, if you move away all changes appear to be lost,

Their are some comments on this on some of the Plex forums which seems to be a bug possibly their end that they say can be resolved by deleting the System.bundle and Framework.bundle from the lib folders, but alas here this makes no difference. It may be an issue regarding that version of the server. Iv been looking if theirs any way to edit the config to store these media locations manually but believe they are stored in a db instance not actually in any config file on disk.

thanks

Hi guys,

Yesterday I accidently found plex package on Mijzelf http: repo (why is it not available on slacker?). Tried to run it at once, but no luck to get into the plex http config page. Then i searched for running daemons and found 2 of them-Plex media server and plugin. Stopping via sh. script didn't stop them. Tried to kill them and noticed, that killing plugin daemon courses it to rerun, but this time third daemon is starting-Plex dlna server. After DLNA server starts, http config page becomes available, but none of changes are saved. Practically the same symptoms, what you get. Then I searched for logs and found that there is a problem loading plugin in Plex media server logs. Then I searched for plugin logs and found it on another place. Seems to be some critical problems creating directories and files, when starting daemon (maybe permissions issue or something messed with directories structure). I can place plex plugin daemon log here if Mijzelf would be so kind to help us.

P. S. I think it worth to compare logs with newest version of PLEX 0.9.7.11.386 logs. I will try to do that first, later this evening and come back with result here.

Strace could help, maybe.

Code: Select all

strace -ff -o plex.log [normal plex start command]
should create a logfile for each process, containing all system calls, including attempts to open files, and the results.
If plex needs some directories to be there, it should be visible in the logfiles.

Here are placed strace logs 48 zipped files:

I think plex standart logs are smaller and informational enough. Just take a look at DEBUG, INFO, ERROR, WARNING column.

Re: Plex via FFP , managed to get running - Question for Mij

Got some progress just creating missing directories and files according to logs. Now all services starts at once, but still some of them has errors. Web administration of plex at http://your_NAS/:32400/web now can save most of settings, excluding those are related with agents.

1. Nope. still can't scan and publish (maybe it's releated with Avahi daemon?)
2. Everything else now seems working and saving settings (didn't worked before)
3. Yes, empty files and dirs according to logs and after that, chowning by plex and chmod full rights.

P.S. Now I'm playing with newest version of plex, extracted from Synology package.

Yahoooooooooooooooooo!!! Finally I have got it fully working. Still i need to figure out the right short way of all steps (and dependancies between steps), because it was long long way of trials and errors. Its was messed with directories in startup script too, as i supposed at the start, but I came to that only at the end of trials  We need to do some changes to starting script, to make Plex working as it should. The lack of linux essential knowledges is slowing down me. Here, I will need your help guys, because script language is not my language :)
Now I am going to sleep and rest for two days :D Please be patient. I'll be back.....

Congratulations!

I think that due to licensing problems, it's a good idea to just distribute a script which can install Plex from an existing package, the Synology package, for instance, because Plex is not open source, nor free.
And of course I can help.

This is a v. good idea.

barmalej2 - could you describe step-by-step what must be done to make it working? Maybe then someone of as will be able to create a proper installation/start script.
