I recently picked up a bricked 2big network 2 that was listed with a failed firmware update

the unit was never opened, as the security stickers on the screws were intact

when the unit arrived I plugged in a pair of brand new WD red 2GB drives

the drives don't spin
the lights don't flash
but the network lights do work
but my router does not assign it an IP

so i removed the IC circled in red below

Image

and read the data out, it was obviously garbage

i found a replacement u-boot image here
ftp://lacie-nas.org/u-boot/lacie-stock/ ... alpha3.bin

can someone let me know if I have done this correct before I solder the IC back
I still have a backup of the EPROM before I replaced the u-boot image

or maybe someone can let me have a stable stock u-boot.bin file ?

Many Thanks

that image is probably not the one you need for this device
You could use the mainline u-boot for this device and follow their instruction to set enevironment variables to let it it boot hard disks
So you probably need the ones stating with u-boot-net2big_v2-2011.12.xxx
But remember that is not a lacie stock u-boot but if you can put it in flash it will enable you to bring it to live using the serial console on the board and talking to u-boot

just out of interest how did you do that ? reading the data
And how do you put new data in

I used a soldering iron to remove the chip

then a TL866A USB Universal Minipro Programmer to read and write the chip

I thought the lacie u-boot was for all their devices looking at their GPL Download Centre ....

but I guess I need 1.3.9 not 1.4 alpha 3

https://www.lacie.com/more/?id=10095

looking back at mainline now, it would allow support for larger drives,
so I think I might re-flash the IC at some point

ftp://lacie-nas.org/u-boot/u-boot-net2b ... 24d58e.bin

if someone does have an original u-boot 1.3.9, it would save my setting the environment......?

I have just been reading this thread

viewtopic.php?f=263&t=16415

and 2 lacie drives has with similar problems to mine were resolved by PSU issues

I did try another PSU and was suspecting PSU problems before re-flashing......

I should probably get a new PSU on order, if the flash didn't fix my problem.

so the stock 1.4 did not help

I checked the contents of the second EPROM circled in red below

Image

it looks like this one contains the drive identifiers

and can be programmed directly on J15

I have now uploaded the mainline firmware to IC20 and I still don't see any lights,

except the Ethernet........

I will try now to access with clunc........

edit: I am now using the 12v line from an ATX power supply for testing so a faulty PSU can be eliminated,
if clunc won't connect I will try to put back my backup on IC20

I did not get any DCHP entry on my router, so my brick is still bricked...

anyone have any ideas on what to try next ?

EDIT:
I think I should take a closer look at this capacitor when I get a chance, perhaps mine is also failed....

if you are trying to restore u-boot to flash, then you are wrong.

You need the one as I mentioned in my earlier post (mainline u-boot version for 2big2...or the original u-boot from lacie

notice that in that ftp directoy above the stock folder where you got this alpha 3 are listed all kirkwood supported devices. All of them need a dedicated u-boot.

Look in the content of alpha 3 and you will find that it is a very early version of u-boot 1.1.1 Jun 15 2007 Marvell 1.7.3 Lacie 1.4 alpha 3
For sure it is not suitable for a 2big2. Also the header of that file is wrong to load it by the bootloader of this nas.

yes I have tried the mainline version and still no dice

with mainline I can't push the IP it needs to by via DCHP

with the mainline code I still have no lights, fan, disks spin
only network lights and no entry for the device in DCHP

does anyone have a copy of the original u-boot for this nas i can try?

the file you need to use if this the spi flash where you try to put it then it is the file with extension .kwb that you need
u-boot-net2big_v2-2011.12-00260-ga24d58e.kwb

The one with extension "bin" is the u-boot image but without a header needed by the loader that actually loads u-boot from flash. The "kwb" one is the u-boot image with this header

well if the mainline doesn't run why would the lacie run, but it is worth a try.
I don't have it but I can have a look in the lacie u-boot source code for this board and see if I can compile one for you

ps did you hook up to the serial port and what output do you get (if any)

thank you, I thought perhaps I was missing something fundamental like the header.....

I was using the bin file !!!!

i have now had a look at both the bin and the kwb

I am not sure that my programmer will support the kwb file, that was why I elected the bin file.
but apart from the header and a few bytes at the end the files are basically the same

so in theory i can just change the file extension from kwb to bin ? and my writing app should be happy...

as for the serial interface, my one has 5v so I have not attempted to connect it

I am thinking to either get a 3.3v adapter or link it to the GPIO port of a raspberry pi

but before I try the serial interface I will try the kwb file and test all the electrolytic capacitors

of course you can rename the kwb file if that makes it possible to write it flash.
The question is of course if the e prom your are programming is the flash for u-boot. Furthermore the flash may also contain the boot loader to load u-boot. I never looked at the content of these e proms

my supercap was blown as I suspected in a previous post

the original was 1F 2.7v but i would need to order from RS, farnell or china

i have replaced mine with a 3F 2.7v off the shelf from maplin for £1.49

it was too big so I had to install it on it's side

Image

as I had already written over the u-boot I have now put mainline with the loader (kwb file)

now my NAS is spinning the disks and getting an IP via DCHP so I think mainline u-boot is now working too

I need to compile clunc for MacOS and install an OS to the drives

will try to access the NAS with clunc some time next week and update with my results

any advice on an OS for the NAS ? as I think the lacie OS will not work with the mainline ROM....

I have been considering debian, I need the NAS to operate in RAID 1 mirror

has the FVDW-SL firmware been updated to support RAID 1 yet ? as I really like the look of that system.

Thanks.

Clunc will not work? Yet there is something called 'netconsole' started.

yes clunc will only work with the lacie stock u-boot
something to do with magic packets.....

I have mainline u-boot in SPI flash now

can I use the FVDW-SL firmware ? I have not been able to register at plugout.....
