Hi All - I must have had this device 2 or 3 years now without really enjoying it - because of poor performance. I thought it was down to my network, but having recently upgraded and looked into it, I understand it's not the fastest piece of kit out there!
So with very, very limited technical skill I managed to follow some of the guides here and I now have root, and webmin on the device. Proof the guides are excellent because my skills are certainly not.
I've read that twonky can slow it down... so I thought about removing it, but I dont know if I'd give up DLNA for minor improvements ?
Anyway, if anyone has any tips on why the disk is constantly busy with no visible requests, I'd be grateful. Also, would I be better getting FTP up and running for faster transfers ?
Thanks
JJ
Slow Perofrmance, Disk sounds always busy doing something

You can run the 'top' command to see which processes are using cpu cycles.
A 'better' FTP won't help, if the disk or network interface is the bottleneck.

There is a script that sweeps any directories that are identifiable as an FTP destination. This script runs every 5 minutes or so. I don't remember specifically. Run TOP and look for a shell script.
I discovered this when I added a link from my home directory for an FTP to my music repository (10K songs) and this script ran continually setting the access properties on the whole music repo.
May be this helps, maybe not.
