NEWBIE: Problem with rsync

Post by nanalisa » Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:19 am

Hi,

I finally managed to get SSH and rsync installed on my HMNHD, and was quite happy.

The goal of all of it is to be able to backup the data on the HMNHD to another Network drive.
For the instant, I connected the "other" network drive via USB to the HMNHD (so that now it is available in the airlive folder) and put the following command via SSH:

Code: Select all

rsync -a -v -P --delete /nethdd/airlive/Xchange /nethdd/backups/xChange
a lot of data transfer went on without any problems and then for one file, the following happened:

Code: Select all

WARNING: Xchange/This one file that makes the problems.rar failed verification -- update retained (will try again).
Xchange/This one file that makes the problems.rar
  1164798638 100% 2.32MB/s 0:07:59 (xfer#108, to-check=111/133)
rsync: read errors mapping "/nethdd/airlive/Xchange/This one file that makes the problems.rar": Input/output error (5)
ERROR: Xchange/This one file that makes the problems.rar failed verification -- update retained.

sent 10433849016 bytes received 2085 bytes 3796198.33 bytes/sec
total size is 9298608538 speedup is 0.89
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1058) [sender=3.0.3]
Can anybody tell me what is the problem and how to solve it?
Please bear in mind that you are talking to a total newbie who would be greatful for very detailed instructions.
Thank you very much in advance.

AFAIK error 5 means that some filesystem error occurred outside the reach of rsync. So try to copy the file manually, to see if it gives a more descriptive error, and/or have a look at dmesg.

I just found out that the source file was corrupted anyway, so deleted it. Maybe that was also causing the problem?
