Hi!

I have problem with my ix2-dl (ix2-ng?), I need replace 2gig drive with two 1gig in mirror mode. However this is not possible with web interface. I've tried trick with USB stick recovery (of course I've used proper "ix2-ng-3.3.2.24208.tgz" firmware). USB stick blinks for ~1second but recovery doesn't occur. I've checked many names of emctools subfolder but without luck? Any help?

I would very much like to have this question answered. The ix2-dl has no documentation whatsoever and google just spams ix2-200 related info which is not applicable.

Some progress on my side, here's the result of the serial output :

FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!
Checking for pre-image script... none.
Image tar file not found: /usb_drive/emctools/ix2-ng_images/*.tgz
No USB Imager and No valid image on system
Going in to Network Imaging Mode

I can't get this. I try 5-6 different usb drives.... no reaction.

My output this with inserted usb drive and one 3 Tb HITACHI HDD (I tried 250Gb drive - no change)

I can manually initialize USB and access to usb drive

Form TechSupport I get ftp://asgimage:uUE25pjNb@dropbox.iomega.net/ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823.zip to firmware imager, but usb drive not initialized at boot... and TechSupport can't help me.

4. Copy ix2-boot.tgz to Fat32 formatted USB stick

5. Attach your HDD on NAS device.
Press and hold the POWER button then plug in the power cable.
when two red light turns on, release the power button.

6. if the second light blue lights, everything is fine.
After the copy process is completed, the device turns itself off.
Remove the USB stick. Plug the network cable. Restart the device.
After that, the device can be accessed from the web.

THANKS!!!! It's worked like a charm!
I successfully recovered ix2-ng (-dl) box on two 3Tb drives (GPT partition table is used).

This two commands is MAGIC!

I don't understand why techsupport can't tell me about it. And official instructions from EMC Imager archive don't contain this info...

This is my instruction for recover:

1. download ftp://asgimage:uUE25pjNb@dropbox.iomega.net/ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823.zip. It is firmware imager.
(Alternative link https://hotfile.com/dl/197157975/923c43d/ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823.zip.html) - ~200 Mb

2. Unpack archive, Insert USB flash (> 1 Gb). I think any vendor will work. And run ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823.exe from archive. This utility burn correct unencrypted firmware to flash drive (\emctools\ix2-dl_images\ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823_imager.tgz).
3. Extract zImage and initrd files from ix2-ng-3.3.2.29823_imager.tgz to Linux desktop (I think dd for windows should also work, but not test).
4. Safely (!!!) remove usb drive after finish.
5. Delete all partitions from new HDD (I only initialized HDD with GPT partition table) that you want use in NAS.
6. Write loader files to HDD with dd (I use VirtualBox'ed LinuxOS with USB->SATA cable):

7. Insert HDD and USB Flash in ix2, press RESET button and insert power cable.
8. IX2 turn on and starting booting from HDD, loading kernel, start usb bus, detect that HDD don't contain system and try recover from Flash USB. When two red light turns on, release the RESET button (~30 sec).

9. After successfully finish NAS power down.

(The username/password for the Storcenter login is admin/(blank). The password for its Linux OS is root/soho)

I attach full PuTTY log with recovery process and first boot after recover from serial bus.

Good Luck!

P.S. Sometimes my NAS can't turn on (after change hdd's). I take off jumper from motherboard, wait 5 secs and put it back. After that NAS successfully started...

i just would like to thank you for this precious informations, about copying the initrd and Zimage to HDD before doing recovery with usb.

i was trying during one week, to follow the Lenovo user guide with the LifeLine Device Imager without success.

Thank you guys for the walkthrough and links. I called lenovo/iomega support and they were not very helpful. Took a few tries before it actually stuck.

ix2-dl bricked with 2 x 3tb seagates during firmware update.

I had to clean both drives then do the "dd" in mint terminal to disk 1. Installed them and followed the "Hold Power" Red lights came on and 15 minutes later my ix2-dl is booting!

Thanks again to both of you that posted the walkthroughs.

You both deserve many Internet points.

Recovered my bricked NAS.

Steps were almost the same with some differences for me:

1. download ftp://asgimage:uUE25pjNb@dropbox.iomega ... .23976.zip. It is firmware imager.

2. Unpack archive, Insert USB flash drive (> 1 Gb). And run ix2-ng-4.0.8.23976.exe from archive. This utility burns correct unencrypted firmware to flash drive (\emctools\ix2-dl_images\).

3. Copy zImage and initrd files from the USB flash drive to Linux desktop

4. Safely (!!!) remove usb drive after finish.

5. Delete all partitions from new HDD that you want use in NAS. Format the HDD and do not initiate it with GPT or MBR partition table.

6. Write loader files to HDD with dd command in Linux (I used Lubuntu version on CD). Replace the X in sdX by the letter of the HDD you plugged in your computer.

You need to perform a 'sudo -s' command in Linux first to do these steps.
dd if=zImage of=/dev/sdX bs=512 seek=2048

dd if=initrd of=/dev/sdX bs=512 seek=8192

7. Insert HDD and USB Flash in ix2-dl, press POWER button and insert power cable.
Ix2 turns on and starts booting, when two red light turns on, release the POWER button.

8. After successful firmware update the ix2 powers down automatically.
Job done !

Unfortunately, this is not working for me anymore...
I tried to install Debian after this guide http://iomega.nas-central.org/wiki/Category:Ix2-200-install-debian and this one http://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/openrd/install/.

Since this guide is about the ix2-200 which uses a different CPU, it couldn't go well...

May it be that I destroyed the uBoot-configuration while following the instructions from that guide http://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/openrd/install/?
I obviously changed some settings with that command

Silence after 'Starting kernel' can have several causes, and almost all boil down to an incompatible kernel.

U-boot copies the kernel out of the uImage @0x040000 (where it was initially loaded) to 0x08000 (because the uImage header specifies so), creates some environment in ram, containing cmdline, pointer to initrd, ..., puts the address of that env (normally 0x04000 when I'm not mistaken) in a register, prints that message, and just jumps to 0x08000.
At that point the kernel has to take over. Well, in most cases not directly the kernel, but some piggyback which first has to decompress the kernel.

When you compiled this kernel yourself, it could be a good idea to enable 'early printk' in .config. This will print kernel messages even before it initializes the serial port.

But I didn't compile the kernel myself. I originally loaded uImage and uInitrd from here http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/installer-armel/current/images/kirkwood/netboot/marvell/openrd/ via USB drive. Which is pretty stupid since that would apply to ix2-200 which uses a slightly different CPU than ix2-dl.

But even after I tried to load the image with the correct firmware that was provided from the LifeLine Device Imager the kernel wont load.

I assume there are some wrong settings in uBoot that prevent booting or installing the correct kernel at all. The terminal output at least shows that the right kernel is decompressed at 0x040000 as you mentioned.

Maybe it would be helpful to know some default-settings of uBoot since I obviously changed them with

That are your only changes to u-boot env? I can hardly imagine these settings would stop the kernel from outputting anything.

I see something strange, but I don't know if it means something. According to the boot script the kernel should be loaded at kernel_start=0x100000. But the bootlog mentions it is at another address: ## Booting image at 00040000 ..., which is also defined that way in bootcmd. Yet there seems to be a valid uImage @0x040000.

Maybe the problem is in this line

NAND read: device 0 offset 0x100000, size 0x300000

Does offset mean, it starts reading at 0x100000 and everything is dealigned by this value?

Can I change the boot script where it says 'kernel_start=0x100000' to a correct value and how?

Another strange thing that might be connected to this condition is that part right at the beginning:

CPU : Marvell Feroceon (Rev 1)
Found kernel at 0x100000
Found initrd at 0x400000

Normally there should only be the name of the CPU, but it also says 'found kernel at Found kernel at 0x100000 / Found initrd at 0x400000'.

Any idea, how I can set everything back to a state where everything behaves normally and the kernel is loaded properly? USB, tftp... every method would be fine!

At the moment the device doesn't even recognize when I press the reset button. It wont even try to load something from usb...
