5Big Network not starting up

Post by mcdade » Mon Oct 15, 2012 10:15 am

Hi,

I have an older 5Big Network which no longer starts up. It seems that the green light is on the power block, so I'm guessing that is still ok. When the power switch is turned to either "on" or "auto" the only sign of life on it is some slight flickering on both network lights, there also seems to be a flicker on the green light on the power block too, it isn't as "solid" as when it's off or not plugged in.

I really worried that this is the board that it blown out on this device, I could get a new power supply for it but I would rather not spend the money if I didn't have to. I have read in this forum that it is possible on this to hook up 4 of the drives into a Linux based boot system and be able to recover the data..but it doesn't sound exactly like a walk in the park and I would rather to avoid this. Looks like getting the newer 5Big (which I have one of those too) will not help either as you can't just install the drives into a new unit and boot from it.

Anyone else have this same situation? Comments or suggestions welcome.

In case anyone is interested in the answer, it was possible to use mdadm. I used Ubuntu on a USB disk, started a pc up with 4 drives attached to the controller (found out that one of my 5 was actually defective) and then used the --force option to build the Array back from the 4 drives. I did mount in read only mode to not modify or destroy any of the data but it seemed to work out.

I have it offline now while I wait for a new device to copy over the data on to. How to do this can be found in the 2Big forum as it's outlined there. I'm too lazy to create a link.

YMMV.

ps. I didn't even bother with the device anymore, it will go into recycling as it was pretty crap to begin with.
