I just posted a thread on installing Debian Wheezy on a NSA325. That prepares the stage for installing openmediavault.

The upcoming release of openmediavault (OMV) which is targeted for release in 2-3 months is based on Wheezy. Lucky for us we can install the prerelease packages from http://packages.openmediavault.org/public and provide feedback to the OMV developers prior to the release.

Without further ado... log in as root and:

edit your /etc/sources.list
Code:
nano /etc/apt/sources.list

to look like

Code:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public kralizec main

Update local package database and install openmediavault-keyring postfix
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install --install-recommends openmediavault-keyring postfix

When you get a prompt to configure Postfix select, No Configuration.

Update again and install OMV.
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install --install-recommends openmediavault

When you get a prompt to configuring mdadm, enter none.
When you get a prompt to start MD arrays automatically, enter yes
When you get a prompt to configure proftpd, select standalone

Note: I am not sure why you can not just apt-get install openmediavault-keyring openmediavault. When I tried last night I got errors until I did it in two separate steps.

Initialise openmediavault and reboot.
Code:
omv-initsystem && reboot

Login to the OMV web portal as 'admin' with password 'openmediavault'.

So OMV Is just supposed to replace the standard zyxel management GUI.
Does it bring any better features?

The biggest advantage is that by running stock Debian you can just install any package that runs on Debian with a single command "apt-get install ...."

The second advantage is that there is tight collaboration with the OMV developers and the OMV-Plugin developers.

If one is happy with the stock management GUI, there is probably little need for Debian + OMV. If one starts adding packages via FFP or other means, Debian + OMV looks good.

Can openmediavault be installed on NSA325 v2?
Is it better than the original software?

After running OpenmediaVault for a few months, I have decided to remove OMV and just run stock Debian on my NSA325 V2.

I found it easier to set up the few services like samba and ftp which I needed from scratch then trying to set up and debug either the stock zyxel or openmediavault software.

Your mileage may vary :)

So if i understand that correctly, i need to have Debian installed first, and the OMV ? Correct?
Is there any way how to do it without serial cable connection ?

Does openmediavault need Debian Wheezy to be installed on the 325(v2) or are the described installation steps based and suitable to the original Zyxel operating system on this NAS?

OMV is basically a set of Debian packages. So yes, you need Debian. Maybe Ubuntu would also work, but the stock firmware is not sufficient.

dfarning, the OpenMediaVault source belongs into an own file called openmediavault.list in /etc/apt/sources.list, correct the guide in this point please as it could lead to trouble for future uprades.

Source Code

1- echo "deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public kralizec main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/openmediavault.list
2- apt-get update
3- apt-get install openmediavault-keyring postfix
4- apt-get update
5- apt-get install openmediavault
6- omv-initsystem

Hi,
I managed these days to upgrade u-boot and install Linux Kernel 4.12.1 Kirkwood package and Debian on my Zyxel NSA325, but I can't install omv.
First I add
Code:
deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public kralizec main > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/openmediavault.list

After input
Code:
apt-get update
I get output :
[list=]root@debian:~# apt-get update
Hit:1 http://security.debian.org stretch/updates InRelease
Get:2 http://packages.openmediavault.org/public kralizec InRelease [9924 B]
Hit:3 http://cdn-fastly.deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates InRelease
Ign:4 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stretch InRelease

If I ignore GPG and signing failure and continue with
Code:
apt-get install openmediavault-keyring postfix
and
Code:
apt-get install openmediavault
so I get output:
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

    Depends: openssh-blacklist-extra but it is not installable
    Depends: php5-proctitle but it is not going to be installed

Unfortunately I am not a Linux guy :(
Please can somebody help me? What did I wrong? What I have to do?

Thanks
