Zyxel 325 v2 not detecting my printer

Post by bletstva » Thu May 21, 2015 1:19 pm

Hi,
I'm completely new here ,firs post!
Anyway - to the point.
I've connected my hp p1102w to the NAS through the USB ,but it is not being detected in the print server setup page.
What am I doing wrong?
Tried - restart,reconnect.
Log says An external USB hub device is plugged.
after connecting.

Tried to sent to print 192.168.0.1:9001 ( default printer port).

Regards

Ok,
So I understand nobody had this problem before. That's fine.
So can anybody tell me what normally happens when you connect your USB printer to you NAS?

OK,
So I presume nobody ever installed a printer onto the NAS right?
Or it's just plainly ignoring...

Ok,did some research today.
Had some time off work.
Anyway, apparently there's only a handful of printer supported.
Anybody that is going to be buying this thing for the purpose of using it as a print server - DON'T!!!

In the above link it is stated that only 9 models of printers are supported!!!!
WTF?!?!?!?!JOKE?!
Anyway. Thanks for your "numerous" replies lol.

Compatibility lists are always sparse. Actually it's not a compatibility list, but a 'known good' list. It doesn't say anything about the printers not listed. Here you can find a list of only HP printers supported in Linux. That are 2404 different devices. You can imagine that each attempt to test all possible printers is ridicule. (But I agree this list is ridiculous)

About your printer I can find this information: Driver Plugin Information:
This printer REQUIRES a downloadable driver plug-in, which is required to enable print, fax or scan support. Use hp-setup to install the printer, and to download and install the plug-in. Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary (non-open) license and are not part of the HPLIP tarball release.

I *think* this means that the firmware of the printer has to be uploaded by the USB host, on connection. Without that firmware the printer cannot work, and so it cannot be detected as printer. It might be possible to upload it from the nas, but it involves some hacking. Here you can find a similar problem on another NAS.
So I presume nobody ever installed a printer onto the NAS right?
Indeed I didn't. When my old parallel HP Laserjet II died I was that sick of all problems I have had to have it networked, that I bought a network printer.
Anyway. Thanks for your "numerous" replies lol.
You're welcome. ;)

I have a similar problem with my Zyxel NAS-326. It loses the USB printer now and then. It does recognize the printer when the printer is powered on and I reboot the NAS. But it loses the printer (shows offline) when I turn off the printer and later turn it on. Nothing helps just rebooting the NAS. Then the printer shows online again. I can print from any PC once the printer is online on teh NAS.
