Hi all,

Hope you may be able to help me out...I think I may have bricked my NSA310s while trying to downgrade firmware on it via a FAT USB stick from 4.75 to 4.70

I just upgraded firmware to 4.75 and reset the NAS to factory settings but I didn't like the new firmware so I wanted 4.70 back.

I used the tutorial here: http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/Flashing_firmware

I used firmware from here: http://www.zyxeltech.de/nsa-310.htm

NSA310_4.70(AFK.1)C0 - 470AFK1C0.bin renamed to ras.bin

The thing is that I forgot to rename nsa310_check_file_C0.Zy_Private to nsa310_check_file_C0 before force reflashing.

I rebooted the NSA with stick inserted, it went to all the steps, after a few minutes only the blue power led was on. I waited for several other minutes and then removed the stick and rebooted it.

Now , upon powering up, all leds light up green, they turn off after and only the blue power led remains light up. I cannot interract with the NAS whatsoever, no IP, no telnet, nothing.

Since I cannot attach the log, I will paste it bellow.

If you are kind enough to point me to how I may recover the NAS I would be forever grateful .

Sadly I don't have one :( , I would've tried serial connection via putty to see what's going on...

Saw someone recommending taking out the internal boards battery for 1 minute and try and boot it afterwards, haven't tried yet though.

I think it won't help in Your case, because maybe the whole firmware damaged... :(

Via a cheap TTL cable, You Can re burn the fw to the NAND, or see what happens (=You Can make changes in the bootloader itself).

Ok, thanks for your answer. I'll give the battery thing a shot, although O think it's useless...
Regarding cable...kinda hard to find an open store during the holidays. I was thinking of taking out the front USB panel from my PC and see if I can use those connectors.
Either way, if I manage to get a serial connection up, is there a working tutorial on how to succesfully reflash it via serial ?

You flashed firmware for different NAS model. You mentioned NSA310S, while your link is for NSA310. If it is possible to unbrick your NAS in this case, only one person is able to help you-it's Mijzelf, I think.

Hmmm, those were the only firmware images I found and everyone was recommending them.

Hope I can fix it, I'm trying to find an USB cable or controller to connect via serial.

I've already emailed Mijzelf a little earlier, hope the email in his scripts is still good :)

If I stop autoboot, I have a working terminal, but no idea on how could I flash it again from USB.

Stop the boot, and execute printenv. There should be a value 'curr_bootfrom', which is 1 or 2. Change that to the other value 'setenv curr_bootfrom X', and save it 'saveenv'.

Now reboot the the box, it should load the previous OS.

If printenv, setenv or saveenv give a syntax error, try 'help', or simply <enter>.

Thank you very much for the answer, will give it a try tomorrow, I left the box back at work :oops: . I'll reply with the outcome tomorrow.

That means that it will load the previous firmware 4.75 and I could correctly flash a downgraded 4.50 firmware ?

OK, it works a bit different than I thought when reading the flash script.

Some theory: The bootloader (u-boot) loads the kernel in memory, and boots it. That is done using 'bootcmd':

bootcmd=nand read.e 0x2000000 $(kernel_addr) 0xA00000; bootm 0x2000000

The command is read from nand address $(kernel_addr) 0xA00000 bytes in memory at address 0x2000000. Then boot the module which happens to be at address 0x2000000.

As you can see there are 2 different kernel addresses, kernel_addr_1=0xc80000 and kernel_addr_2=0x4640000. The 'current' kernel address is kernel_addr=0xc80000, at which address we know a wrong kernel is stored.

I can't think of a way how both kernel addresses could be overwritten by an incompatible kernel. The flash script always reboots directly after writing the changed environment in flash. The only way to get 2 incompatible kernel is to kill the script after the writing of the new environment, and before the reboot, and then start the script over. But that can't be accomplished using the force-flash stick.

So I assume a compatible kernel is still available on address 0x4640000. It can be manually booted:

This kernel contains an initramfs, which will detect your flash stick, and execute the flash script.
