NSA320 + Samsung Smart Tv: Subtitle problem

Post by TheSounds » Thu Feb 14, 2013 9:55 am

Hi,

I'm trying to stream movies from my NSA320 to my samsung smart tv (40es6900).
The subtitles have the same name as the movie, but my tv just plays the movie without subtitles.

Any ideas?

I'm playing the videos using the twonky media server.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, they have the same name.

I think it will be best to change my media player from twonky to miniDLNA or PLEX.

What would be the best option, PLEX or miniDLNA? Or maybe something else?

Depends on what you want. Minidlna is fast and lightweight DLNA server, Plex is opposite. Plex have metadata of movies, minidlna not. Plex serve internet video streams to TV, minidlna not. Thumbnails also not available in minidlna.

Thanks for the reply!

Does one of them support fast forward and reverse?

Both support, but not in all video formats. Situation with fast forward is unpredictable in both cases.

I've found solution for this ;)
mkvmerge gui, join mkv with subtitles (it takes few secs to merge) and you are done.
You can play by build in twonky.

Main problems with subtitles on Twonky in my opinion:
1. Client profile is not correctly assigned automatically.
2. Video and srt files contains special characters.
3. Client profile doesn't meet capabilities of client.
4. Client really does not support subtitles with some video types.

Solutions:
1. Assign profile manually.
2. Rename both files. Should be: filename.mkv filename.srt
3. Edit client profile. Long story.
4. Do exactly like Tarnak in post above.

P.S. Sometimes helps renaming video file to avi type. Don't know whether this applies to the mkv.

The built-in twonky don't stream mkv and subtitle files.
After I installed minidlna,it solved.now,I can play my downloaded mkv within dts and subtitle file on my Samsung 55es6100 smart tv.

Twonky handles mkv with merged subtitles. Subs must be in srt format! Anyway, Today I've moved to minidlna, I'll give it a try ;)

The video and subtitle files need to be renamed properly with the same name and also put in the same folder. It's also important to update the firmware to the latest version. Or you can burn the subtitle in videos and make it become a part of video which will not be removed in any case. Here is the way: http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/ti ... oblem.html
I perfer to hard subtitle as it will never be wrong.
