If i understand right we won't be able to upgrade to 4.5 because of old kernel version.
Crashplan knows this and won't upgrade automatically.
Is there any way to prevent upgrades on Windows clients?

Yes you are correct it does say on the crashplan release notes that it wont upgrade to 4.5.0 if you have an old kernel. Please below: https://support.code42.com/Release_Notes/CrashPlan_For_Home/4.5.0
Quote:
As of November 30, 2015, the CrashPlan app will not automatically upgrade to version 4.5.0 on devices running kernel version 2.6.31 or earlier. CrashPlan app version 4.4.1 is the last supported version for kernels 2.6.31 and earlier. See Linux CrashPlan App Version 4.5 Cannot Back Up for more details.

To stop it updating on a Windows machine's simply set the Windows service "CrashPlan Backup Service" to Manual.

Hmm this is going to interesting to see how long before they retire Crashplan 4.4.1 and we are Crashplan-less. If they do I'll either
a) ask for a refund from CrashPlan
or b) install it on my Windows box and map a network drive to my Zyxel NSA
or c) install it on a RaspberryPi which the Raspbian Linux Distro is pretty well maintained. Although inotify won't pickup filesystem changes so it'll be suboptimal.

Hmm...

Unfortunately my Crashplan installation on the Windows machine upgraded automatically to 4.5.0 (I discovered it right now).
But: It's still doing the backup to my NAS! So it seems still to work between a 4.5.0 and a 4.4.1 installation.

Crashplan version 4.4.1 for Windows is available here for reference: https://download2.code42.com/installs/win/install/CrashPlan/jre/CrashPlan_4.4.1_Win.exe

This prevents Crashplan from working/doing backups at all. I had to revert it again to automatic for Crashplan working again on my Windows client.

Anyone managed to install Crashplan with this instructions on one of the new Zyxel NAS devices with new OS/Firmware 5.x?

I'm considering an "update" from 325-v2 to 326.

I just noticed, that the update directory of my Crashplan installation is running full (over 500 subdirectories) with the extracted update files of a update from October 2015.
Anyone else with this problem and an idea how to stop it?

I followed this thread and successfully managed to install Crashplan on my NAS540. I documented everything I did, so if you would like to check my documentation please drop me a PM and I will be happy to send it to you. It took a while for me to get everything sorted out. 8-)

Probably you don't have the latest version installed. If I remember right, there was some confusion with version 4.4.1, an inital version and then a fix about a month later.
When I installed both, there were no more update downloads...

But it probably doesn't matter now, according to latest info from Code42 computer to computer backups should stop working tomorrow.
Quote:
Beginning on May 16, 2016, all devices that connect to the Code42 public cloud will be upgraded to CrashPlan app version 4.7. If you use another computer you own or a friend's computer as a backup destination, both computers must upgrade to CrashPlan app version 4.7 in order for backups to continue. These computers must be upgraded to a supported operating system so that the CrashPlan app can automatically upgrade to version 4.7 and continue computer-to-computer backups.

And we can't upgrade to 4.7, kernel version is too old...
Can anyone suggest an alternate solution, excepting getting a new NAS?

Unfortunately Zyxel stopped making the NSA325_v2 6months ago according to ZyxelForum.de. So I doubt that there will be a firmware update that will update the kernel or libc in the near future. Personally I don't think that the NSA326 is much of an upgrade, ARM v7 with slower clock and still 512mb of RAM to warrant an upgrade.

You could try installing debian on your NAS and get rid of stock firmware/FFP. Then you might not need to worry about the kernel version as much but you would have a lot of work to do.

So I am looking at buying a cheap BananaPi/Odroid-C2 ARM SBC which both have a gigabit ethernet on board. Install a debian distro, then run Crashplan on that and connect to my NSA with NFS for backups to Crashplan cloud. Not great but I can't think of any other options at the moment.

@normsland
Yes, it's sure that there won't be further FW upgrades for our NSA325v2 (confirmed by Zyxel on the German Zyxel Support forum).

I think, I'll try to use it like I did before (mapped drive) or just change the backup solution, away from Crashplan.
Setting up debian is not trivial and Crashplan usage is not sufficient as reason for this efforts, imho.

BTW
the 326 has a better CPU (more cores)

It seems that Code42 Public Cloud could be a different product for businesses. See here and here for more info. We are using Crashplan Home and Crashplan Central AKA Crashplan Private Cloud. So we could have some more time. Fingers crossed. Thanks :)

I noticed yesterday evening, that my Windows clients (ver 4.7.0) are unable to connect to the NAS for over two weeks now.
The NAS seems to connect to Crashplan online without problems. I'll check the NAS log files these days.

Is it still working on at other users here?

Reinstalling the JRE like adviced here (https://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4/ ... ot_Back_Up) didn't solve the issue. I didn't try to reinstall crashplan completetely on the NASl.

Here's a part of my log (service.log.0) on the NAS:

Is the backup still working at anybody's NSA325?!
Please give me a feedback, whether the problem I have is just here or whether it isn't working anymore (with new Windows clients ....)!

Still working for me. I haven't changed anything and it is still working. Although still using Crashplan 4.4.1 on Windows to connect to the NAS to configure.
