Writing to NAS very / too slow

Post by funkyice » Sat Jul 25, 2015 8:38 pm

Dear all,

I hope someone can help me on the following topic.
I own a ix4-200d NAS with newest firmware and it includes 4 hard drives 2 TB each with RAID 5 configuration.
One of those hard drives needs to be changed 3 weeks ago. It is the same manufacterer, same speed etc.

I am not sure when I have copied something to the NAS, but actually it is sooo slow, which is really annoying!
The file I am currently copying is a movie (size 5.5 GB) and the speed Windows is reporting looks like:

I copy files over LAN with a 1 Gigabit Switch and I have no problems while I copy files to my Readynas NAS.

So, if someone have a solution for that, I am glad to get more information.

Thanks for your help,
Sebastian

I think that nas should be able to write at 30~35MB/sec. Clearly it's much slower. That could be a bad cable, or a bad disk. But maybe you by accident enabled disk encryption.

You can login over ssh and have a look. 'top' will show the cpu usage of all processes. If some process is consuming all cpu cycles, it probably causes your problem. 'ifconfig' can show some network info. 'dmesg' will show the kernel log buffer. If a disk is failing, it might be visible here.

In the meanwhile I recognize that write speed is only slow for large files.
After turning off the Media Player on the NAS it seems to be a real performance boost.
Instead of copying with around 5 MB/s I have now around 28 MB/s. Not the best at all, but much better.
