Building file system.

Post by Cableguy12345 » Thu Sep 08, 2016 5:35 pm

Hi all
I bought a ix4-200d cloud edition used off the internet. It has 4 1 terabyte drives. The person said it worked fine but he formatted the hdd s. When I turn it on it shows me my ip but it says it is building the file system. It is going on about 10 hours and is still displaying the message. Did I buy a brick? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I think you have to provide the firmware on an USB stick. Here you can find it. Unzip it on a FAT formatted stick with at least 1GB free space. Plug it in and reboot the box.

Warning: this will destroy all data on the disks, but that's not an issue here, I guess.

Thank you for your reply. I formatted a thumb drive with FAT and extracted the recovery file to the drive. i used the front usb slot and rebooted the system, turned it off and on. It did not read the usb as there was no activity light.

ix4-200d-TI412P - Iomega StorCenter ix4-200d

Periodic consistency check: Enabled
Total Drive Size:3.64 TB
Capacity:0 B
Used: 0 B
Available: 0 B
Drive 4 ST31000520AS, CC38 931.51 GB
Drive 3 ST31000520AS, CC38 931.51 GB
Drive 2 ST31000520AS, CC38 931.51 GB
Drive 1 ST31000520AS, CC38 931.51 GB

I tried holding the reset button and the power until the usb started blinking. it blinked for about 5 min and then just stopped. i waited 20 minutes and it would not power on. i had to unplug it and plug it back in. I feel i am missing something obvious but have no experience with this. I will try any suggestions you may have but i feel i will just chuck it out and vow never to buy anything used of that nature off the internet again.

How sure are you it's a cloud edition, and not an 'ordinary' ix4-200d?

i have followed the steps and the nas was reading from the usb but it did not turn itself off, even after an hour so i powercycled it. it booted 100% and now says the file system is being prepared. the bottom white light is on solid and no hdd light flashing.
any suggestions?

*Maybe* the thumbdrive isn't big enough? The firmware is compressed, and will be extracted to the thumbdrive itself. So the drive should be big enough to contain both the compressed data and the decompressed data together.

Yet I don't know how the box behaves if the decompression fails, due to lack of diskspace.

Success. Thank you
The NAS shutdown finally on its own after firmware replace. Only used drive 1 during the process. Then added one drive at a time. It is now working the way it should.
I am grateful for the advice.
