Arbitrary hardrives on Buffalo Terrastation a waste of time?

Post by Pocketsand » Thu Mar 03, 2016 11:14 am

I've been wanting a NAS for a while and recently managed to pick up an old Buffalo TerraStation Pro v1 from someone at the office.

Being a noob I expected it to all be plug and play so I removed all 4 drives, slapped in a 1TB NTFS disk full of data expecting it to work.

Of course, I now know that the OS is not decoupled from the HDDs which come with the device. This thing is fairly old and I was just hoping to use it as a network share to give my home network access to all the multimedia I have.

Am I just going down the rabbit hole if I get a serial cable to SSH get into this thing to try and get it working in a non-raid set up with arbitrary drives? I am not adverse to hacking but I haven't paid for it yet so can just give it back if it is going to be impossible or a headache. E.g. I am not even clear from reading the wiki whether it has embedded linux or just a bootloader.
