In Windows you can use PuTTY. You have to specify which serial port you use. If you don't know it, you can find it in Device Manager.

In that case you almost for sure have the wrong cable. You cannot use a PC RS232 port, as the box uses 3.3V TTL. You need something like this

Glad you warned me about the cable. Was just about to plug this in ignoring the voltage difference.

POOP THE BED!!!

Got it to work. I've not got round to getting the serial adapter but tried a different HD.

I was using an old Maxtor DimondMax Plus 9 120GB SATA 6Y120M004541A.

A mate gave me an old freecom 500GB NAS with a Western Digital WD5000AAVS.

I formatted it fully (slow in ubuntu) NTFS and then did the following in terminal:

Code:
spudgun@spudgun-System-Product-Name:~$ suso su
No command 'suso' found, did you mean:
Command 'sudo' from package 'sudo-ldap' (universe)
Command 'sudo' from package 'sudo' (main)
Command 'sumo' from package 'sumo' (universe)
suso: command not found
spudgun@spudgun-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for spudgun:
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# zcat Iomega-HMNHD-CE-1st-32M.img.gz | dd of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
0+1014 records in
0+1014 records out
33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 1.29447 s, 25.9 MB/s
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# mkfs -t vfat /dev/sdg1
mkfs.fat 3.0.26 (2014-03-07)
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# mkdir -p /mnt/hmnhdce-recover && mount /dev/sdg1 /mnt/hmnhdce-recover
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# mkdir -p /mnt/hmnhdce-recover/emctools/hmnhd_images
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# cp imager_3.1.14.995.tgz /mnt/hmnhdce-recover/emctools/hmnhd_images/
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# touch /mnt/hmnhdce-recover/emctools/hmnhd_images/reinstall
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun# cp bootrom.txt /mnt/hmnhdce-recover/
root@spudgun-System-Product-Name:/home/spudgun#

Thanks so much for your help Stefan. Much appreciated. :)
