Changing view-definitions.xml on CLOUDBOX?

Post by akahata » Tue Nov 26, 2013 8:42 pm

Hello. I'm sorry if the topic already has been mentioned, but I've searched, but couldn't find any helpful information on this specific topic.

I bought a LaCie Cloudbox some months ago. The false alphabetic sort order of music files in "by folder"-mode causes me stomach pains. So I want to add the famous "sortcriteria='+upnp:originalTrackNumber'" to the "view-definitions.xml"-file.

My Question: Is there a way to edit view-definitions.xml on the LaCie Cloudbox 1T with a PC (Win VISTA)? If "Yes", could You give me a little hint how to do this?

I used WinSCP via FTP/SFTP to look for the the named file, but somehow there are absolutly no TWOKY-file visible on the NAS. Login on the Cloudbox works fine (both FTP/SFTP). My music/video/photo/etc.-files are visible/edible/ftp-able. In the WinSCP-Explorer I can see /root and a grey-out ".lacie" folder, but no view-definitions.xml.

I'm a noobie on LINUX/TWONKY, so I thank for your help in advance.

Via FTP/SFTP you don't see the filetree on the NAS, only the shares. Maybe this can help you.

Back again...

Changing the view-definitions.xml on the godforsaken cloudbox does not work, because it's marked "read only".

Anyone any idea? :-( Some kind of "bind-mounting" or else? I'm not a Linux expert...

you can only solve this if you have shell access to your cloudbox, for example via ssh.

If you try to change permission of files in shared folders via samba or ftp server it will not let you if you are not the owner of the file. Apparently for the files you try to do this you are not the owner.

So you net to get shell access and act as user "root"

Yes, I have ssh/root access to the cloudbox via Ubuntu. But I can't change the view-definitions.xml; it's marked as "read only". Even working with "sudo etc. does not work. I not an expert on NAS but to me it seems like the view-def...xml is in a "read only" RAM disc.

The solution seems to be copying the view-def file to admin (so it can be edited) and remount that to the origianl directory. But this exceeds my skills a little bit (it's been 20 years since I had to work with UNIX/Linux at university).

you could try then to use the chmod command
to chnage the file from readonly to r/w for everybody
(chmod 755 /path-to/file-name, or sudo chmod 755 /path-to/file-name)

chmod / sudo chmod does not work; all I get is an error message: "view-def...xml: Read only file system."

EDIT:
Some people have the same problems on WD NAS:

or

http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud- ... d-p/815579 (second posting):
"The reason you do not have write access to the /views or anything under /usr/local/twonky/ is because that directory tree is under the read-only RAMdisk (root file system)."

then remount r/w it using a command like this

Code: Select all

mount -o remount, rw /
