Telnet and SSH for starters

Post by tridy » Tue Dec 10, 2013 10:24 am

I have been using my NSA220+ for a couple of years now, so I decided to have it at as small development Apache + MySQL server as well.
While I still cannot get FFP Stick booting, I was wondering, when/if I get through, is there a manual for starters on how to use Telnet and SSH? Like, what are all those commands, why those commands, and what do they do, for example:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get install openssh-server
apt-get remove telnetd
and how much do I need to understand and know to achieve my task.

Apt is the Debian package manager. Alas it's not available on a ZyXEL/FFP box. For FFP (0.7) the package manager is slacker.

And about the basics... GNU/Linux is an OS, which has a zillion possibilities, and (fortunately?) there are big differences in different distro's. Fortunately the basics, A bash (like) shell, on a Posix filesystem, are almost always the same.
More info here, and remember, you don't need to know/understand all ins and outs of GNU/Linux to be able to write a simple script.
